We had a great time at Woodford and Manchester. With loads of positive feedback.

PS. Does anyone have a spare Alto Sax I could borrow for the next five months? Mine got written off on the way back from Limmud.

I think that God would not allow him to keep any of the riches. The essence of giving is that you should give to others with no thought of reward for yourself. In fact the best sort of giving is when neither the giver or the receiver know who each other are.

The seeker after justice decides to swap his own short candle for that of his neighbour's longer one. Before he does so however he realises that it would be wrong and desists. He is prepared to meet his fate and justice has prevailed.

Well, I confess I looked it up as I felt that was the only way I could join in and comment - is that allowed?

According to Rabbi Judah, the tribes weren't jostling to be the first but rather not to be the first to enter the sea (and I can't say I blame them). But one man, Nahshon ben Aminadab, displayed faith, bravery, commitment, leadership or insanity, or some combination of those qualities, and jumped in. And it was not until he was almost fully immersed that the sea parted.

I like this version because it has made me reflect on how one person can help or in this case save others by taking the first step.

His children replied reassuringly saying, "Listen O Israel (our father), the Eternal One is our God, the Eternal God is one (Shema Yisrael Adonai Eloheynu Adonai Echad). Just as in your heart there is only one God, so too in our hearts there is only One."

Jacob, felt relieved by his children's loyalty and answered them saying, "Praised for ever be God's glorious majesty."

This was the first time the first line of the Shema was answered with the words, 'Baruch sheym kavod malchuto le-olam va-ed'. When we say those words today we are continuing to commit ourselves to the ancient heritage of Judaism, which began all those years ago with just one family .

Though Jacob had intended to tell his children about being slaves in Egypt and the suffering they would undergo, but he thought they might not wish to have this special relationship with God and to be God's servants, so he felt he could free them from this intimate service by not telling them of what lay in store for them as God's Servants. So when God appeared to Jacob and told him to serve him, his sons promised to honour their father's wishes and to treat God with deference and respect and to serve him as their ancestors had always done.

We enjoyed the full complement of our musicians and wonderful ruah - let's hope we can keep it up! It seems that this service has its own regulars who come especially - thank you to all who are making it special!
