According to Rabbi Judah, the tribes weren't jostling to be the first but rather not to be the first to enter the sea (and I can't say I blame them). But one man, Nahshon ben Aminadab, displayed faith, bravery, commitment, leadership or insanity, or some combination of those qualities, and jumped in. And it was not until he was almost fully immersed that the sea parted. I like this version because it has made me reflect on how one person can help or in this case save others by taking the first step. When we say those words today we are continuing to commit ourselves to the ancient heritage of Judaism, which began all those years ago with just one family .
